STOP inmate identified, still on the run after escaping from program vehicle in Dayton

UPDATE @ 9:25 a.m. (Sept. 27): 

A 43-year-old Dayton woman remains on the run after escaping from the back of a Secure Transitional Offender Program vehicle Thursday, according to officials.

Tonya Smith was being transported from a community service work project in a Montgomery County STOP vehicle when she jumped out of the vehicle at the intersection of East Third Street and St. Clair Street just before noon Thursday, county officials said in an emailed statement.

Smith was serving out a sentence on two felony drug charges.

FIRST REPORT (Sept. 26):

An inmate of the Secure Transitional Offender Program is on the run after escaping from the back of a cruiser on East Third Street in Dayton, according to investigators.

Around 11:50 a.m., several officers were requested near East Third Street and South St. Clair Street to search for the inmate who was able to escape from a cruiser, dispatch records indicate.

The inmate, only identified as a woman, was on a work release and was being transported when she was able to get out of the cruiser near the intersection of East Third Street and South St. Clair Street, reports indicate.

Police scanner traffic indicated the inmate walked into the Dayton library branch. However, security footage showed she was able to get into a car that drove away from the scene, police scanner traffic indicated.

Additional details about the search and inmate were not available.

The S.T.O.P. program is described as a drug and alcohol intervention program where Montgomery County Jail inmates have the opportunity to participate in work details and community service projects, according to the program’s website.
