The search for a new police chief is underway in Arcanum after the former police chief resigned while under investigation for alleged “impropriety” with a female.

Andrew Ashbaugh submitted his resignation last week and the village accepted it the same day.

Right now a sergeant is leading the police department, but Mayor Greg Baumle said that won’t be for long.

Council met Wednesday night and approved an outside group to help with the search and the village hopes to have someone hired in two to three months.

This all comes after a Darke County Sheriff’s report detailed how Ashbaugh created a fake Facebook profile to talk to high school students.

Ashbaugh claimed it was to get an insider perspective on the school drug’s problem, according to the report.

A girl reportedly told detectives that he talked to her on Facebook and would drive by her house and that he followed her to school and offered to have her job shadow him.

However, prosecutors  said they didn't have enough to charge Ashbaugh.

“During the investigation the police chief chose to resign,” said Baumle. “He didn’t have to resign at that point. We were moving through our process and moving forward for the village. We’re turning the page.”
