Security guard’s bond is $1M in fatal shooting outside Dayton bar

A 49-year-old security guard is held on $1 million in the Montgomery County Jail, accused of fatally shooting a man outside Ashwood Lounge earlier this month.

Steven Coleman was indicted last week on multiple charges including murder, felonious assault, tampering with evidence, and several weapons-related charges in the death of Robert Lee Burdette during a Nov. 7 altercation outside the bar at 3500 N. Main St. in Dayton.

“Another security guard was involved in an altercation with the victim when the defendant punched the victim in the head, then pulled out a .40 caliber handgun and shot the victim in the head,” the prosecutor’s office said in a prepared statement.

Burdette was taken to a local hospital following the shooting, where he died Nov. 10 after being removed from life support.

The prosecutor’s office said Coleman had previously been convicted in Florida on drug charges, which prohibited him from possessing a gun.

Coleman was arraigned Tuesday in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court, where a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf.
