Sidney train-car crash driver released from hospital

The driver involved in a fatal train-car crash in Sidney has been released from the hospital.

Frank Shields Jr, 41, was released from Miami Valley Hospital to return home, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Shields was initially flown to Miami Valley Hospital following the crash early Sunday that killed 15-year-old Mackenzie Jones of Sidney, authorities said Monday.

The accident occurred about 3 a.m. on South Vandemark Road.

Jones was pronounced dead at the scene. Shields, whose address has not been released, was taken by CareFlight to the hospital.

Responding officers found a red car partially pinned underneath a CSX train that was not moving at the time of the crash, police said. The red car had been headed south on Vandemark before it drove into the parked train.

What caused the accident has not been established, but eyewitnesses said there are no crossing gates at the intersection on South Vandemark Road, only reflective signs before the crossing to alert drivers.

Sidney police are continuing their investigation.

No other accidents of this nature have been reported at that crossing, a Sidney police sergeant said.
