An Indianapolis man is accused of cashing a forged check at a Greenville bank, and then trying to cash another fake check at a bank in Versailles.

John Thomas Hines, 56, is facing multiple counts of forgery and is booked into the Darke County Jail.

Hines cashed a check for $2,392.90 made out to him on Dec. 3 from Brumbaugh Construction at Second National Bank, 1302 Wagner Ave., in Greenville, according to Greenville police.

The same day, Hines tried to cash another check made out to him for $3,239.19 from Brumbaugh Construction. However, the Versailles branch of Second National Bank would not cash the check because it was bad and called police. Versailles officers arrested Hines on suspicion of forgery, according to police and jail records.

Greenville police contacted Brumbaugh Construction, based in Arcanum, which said that they never issued checks to Hines and that they were forged.
