An off-duty West Carrollton firefighter who lives near the house in the 4900 block of Dinsmore confirmed the fire in a bedroom, which firefighters put out quickly, Blake said. Crews were dispatched about 3:50 p.m.

The resident was taken to Kettering Medical Center for other medical issues firefighters felt needed to be evaluated. The resident did not suffer any injury because of the fire, the captain said.

The preliminary investigation reveals the possible cause as discarded smoking materials left on a mattress, Blake said.

Firefighters aren't sure whether the resident was asleep, but she won't be able to stay in her home tonight because of the heat and smoke damage.

Blake estimated the dollar damage to the structure and contents at $50,000.
