Springboro man leading for UD, Army

Springboro resident Daniel Redden’s nearly 27 years of service in the U.S. Army included a deployment to Iraq from 2009 to 2010.

“The Army is a great opportunity for young men and women,” Redden said. “There are huge benefits. I tell my cadets that when they join the program, they are joining an elite fraternity. Less than one percent of the U.S. population volunteers for military service.”

Redden, 48, grew up in Hamilton and graduated from University of Dayton in 1985.

He has been married to Laura for nearly 25 years. The couple has three children, Shaun, Jeffrey and Erin. Redden’s sons also serve in the Army.

Redden’s activities include golf, reading and volunteering as a catechism teacher at St. Mary Catholic Church, in Franklin.

He also volunteers at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park in Dayton. As a professor of military science at UD, Redden has commanded the ROTC program since July 2011.

“I enjoy what I’m doing,” Redden said. “I told my wife, ‘This is my career and I will get out when it stops being fun.’ ”
