Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers and fire/rescue crews from Xenia and Xenia Twp. were dispatched just after 8:30 p.m. on a reported vehicle rollover on U.S. 35 in Xenia.
They found the vehicle, which could not be seen from the roadway having traveled at least 60 feet into the field, but no driver.
Troopers told News Center 7 they searched the field using a heat-detecting device but found no one.
After some more checking, troopers said, they learned from the vehicle's owner that he let his girlfriend take the vehicle. She has an expired license, the owner told troopers.
Troopers said they cannot confirm she was driving but her belongings were found in the vehicle. They said they believe she may have been thrown from the vehicle in the crash.
According to their preliminary investigation, the SUV was headed east on U.S. 35 when it crossed the median, hit a ditch on the westbound side, went airborne over a fence and into the field.
