Stonebridge Apartment fire not believed suspicious

UPDATE @ 5:45 p.m.: The fire marshal's office is asking anyone who shot video or photos from the earlier stages of the fire to contact the office at 1-800-589-2728.

UPDATE @ 2:09 p.m.: State Fire Marshal spokeswoman Lindsey Burnworth: "There is no evidence of criminal activity right now."

UPDATE @ 11 a.m. (Aug. 20): The fire started on the second story balcony, but the cause remains undetermined, according to Deputy Fire Chief John Mercs

The State Fire Marshal was on scene Wednesday morning inspecting the damages and investigating.

A damage estimate has not been determined, but Mercs said he wouldn't be surprised if the costs run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

UPDATE @ 10:55 p.m. (Aug. 19): Fifty people have been displaced because of the fire at the Stonebridge Apartment Homes that affected 18 units, Beavercreek Twp. Deputy Fire Chief John Mercs said.

All residents have been accounted for, he said, and the smoke inhalation victim is believed to have been a bystander and not one of the residents.

UPDATE @ 9:55 p.m.: As many as 20 residents will be displaced after the massive fire at the Stonebridge Apartment Homes and as many as 10 units have been affected by smoke and flames, but there are no reports of any serious injuries, Beavercreek Twp. Deputy Fire Chief John Mercs said.

"When crews got on scene... they weren't getting any reports from anybody that said anyone was in there, which was a good sign," he said. But "we still have to double check."

Firefighters were working the property management to make sure all residents and occupants are accounted for, he said.

A medic was dispatched on a case of smoke inhalation, Mercs said, but he doesn't believe the victim was a firefighter.

Two dogs rescued from the fire have been reunited with their owners, he said. He did not know the status of any other pet that may have been in the building, which contains multiple units.

The main body of fire has been knocked down, Mercs said, "but we are still dealing with hot spots." The main fire appears to have been in the attic. Flames were showing through the roof when crews arrived on scene, he said.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, and an investigator from the state fire marshal's office has been dispatched, the deputy chief said.

There was a fire at the same building a few years ago, Mercs said.

UPDATE @ 9:03 p.m.: Flames at the Stonebridge Apartment Homes are rekindling and crews are continuing their efforts to bring the massive fire under control.

We're told that at least a third of the roof has been destroyed. Hundreds of people gathered to watch the fire and crews work. There are no reports of any injuries.

Earlier in the evening, we received calls that smoke from the three-story building could be seen from miles away.
