Today is International Waffle Day. Here are 5 things we think you should know.

1. Waffle irons have been around for centuries, but even earlier there were wafer irons. The irons were designed usually with an image of Christ on the cross, and the wafers, made out of flour and water, were used for communion.

2. The earliest known waffle recipe dates back to Paris in the 14th century. A husband wrote instructions for his wife about how to make waffles. The ingredients: eggs, salt, wine and flour.

3. Belgian waffles have been around since the 18th century. The iron is deeper than a regular waffle iron, and the squares are larger for holding more goodies in them. In the United States, Belgian waffles are usually served with powdered sugar, whipped cream and some fruit.

5. Or get out your own waffle iron. Anyone for some gluten-free waffles with Girl Scout Toffee-Tastic Cookies? Or how about using your waffle iron for making Waffled Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies?
