Trotwood and Clayton seek slower speed limit for safety

Crashes this year already equal all of last year.

Trotwood and Clayton police are working together to lower the speed limit on Westbrook Road because of an increase in crashes.

The current speed limit on Westbrook Road is 50 mph. Police are seeking to reduce it to 40 miles per hour.

Officers said drivers are on pace to have more crashes this year there.

“We had about 10 crashes on the road in 2015,” said Trotwood Police Department Capt. John Porter. “We already have 10 crashes for the first three months of 2016.”

Approximately 2,700 vehicles travel daily on the road, which runs through both cities, according to a traffic study. Many of the crashes are caused by speeding, unclear roadway marking and blind spots near intersections, officers said.

A traffic study showed drivers reached a maximum speed of 67 mph.

Police also want to change the speed limit because the road is near multiple residential areas, such as Wolf Creek Run Homes, Fox Run Apartments, Meadowsweet Homes and Country View Estates.

Kellie Hall, 28, who lives near the road, said the high speeds make her worry about the children in her neighborhood.

“People drive way too fast,” Hall said. “The school bus lets kids off on the road, and there is no sidewalk for them to avoid the cars.”

Trotwood and Clayton plan to resurface the road and update the traffic markings in 2017.

So far there have not been any fatal accidents, but police want to act before there is one.

“Most of the accidents are injury and property damage crashes,” Porter said. “We still want to lower the speed limit to give drivers more time to prevent these accidents.”

If Trotwood and Clayton are able to have to the speed limit reduced in the coming months, a 30-day notice will be posted before the new speed limit takes affect.
