Vehicle catches fire inside transmission business

The cause of a car fire inside a Springfield transmission shop early Wednesday evening was not immediately known.

Crews were called shortly after 6:30 p.m. to Ohio Transmission, 2419 E. Main St., on reports of a vehicle on fire inside a maintenance bay.

It wasn’t clear early in the investigation what may have sparked the fire that destroyed the Land Rover Range Rover, but it did not appear suspicious, Springfield Fire Rescue Division Capt. Tunney Morris said.

The division’s Fire Marshal Bureau was called to investigate further.

The owner of the shop told fire investigators the vehicle hadn’t run in several months and he’d recently put a new battery in it, Morris said.

The building sustained only smoke damage. No injuries were reported.
