2 teens fall through icy pond in Xenia, suffer effects of hypothermia

UPDATE @ 5:15 p.m.

A teen boy and girl who were rescued after they fell through the ice at a pond this afternoon are in stable condition, Xenia Fire Division Lt. Greg Beegle said.

“They were up to their waist, kind of floating,” he said. “They did suffer some effects of hypothermia. They were in the water, from accounts, approximately 15 to 20 minutes.”

When fire crews arrived, bystanders and Xenia police were attempted to rescue them. The pond, which was on private property, was in an area thick with brush, which made it difficult to reach, Beegle said.

Rescuers from Xenia Twp. and the Xenia Fire Division used ropes to help the teens get out of the freezing water.
