UPDATE @ 4:42 p.m.: The fire at the KFC in Xenia appears to have started in the mulch bed and worked its way inside the walls and to the roof of the restaurant, Xenia Fire Division Chief Kenneth Riggsby said.

There were no reported injuries.

Riggsby said the cause is under investigation, but the mulch could have caught fire from a dropped or tossed cigarette or other smoking materials.

The restaurant on West Main Street has been shut down because of the damage to the inside walls, he said. How long the location will be closed depends on repairs and the health department inspection.

It’s too early to put a dollar amount on the estimated damage, he said.

INITIAL REPORT

A working fire has been reported at a KFC restaurant.

Emergency reports indicate heavy smoke is showing from the fast-food eatery at 124 W. Main St. in Xenia.

We have a crew on the way and are working to learn more.
