Construction is set to begin early next week on Xenia’s first roundabout, at the intersection of East Church Street and North Columbus Street.

The Ohio Department of Transportation said in a release that construction would begin, following preliminary site work, on Monday, March 16.

During construction, the intersection will be closed for up to 90 days, the release said, and traffic on U.S. 42 (Columbus Street) will be rerouted by way of Main Street/Old U.S. 35 and Bickett Road. Construction is contingent on the weather, but is scheduled to end in late June.

Arrow boards and signs will alert motorists of the work.

Once completed, the release said, in addition to the single-lane roundabout there will be upgrades to pedestrian facilities, curbs, gutters and the storm sewer systems.

The contract for the work was awarded to Barrett Paving Materials, Inc., for about $990,000 last spring.

This project has been in planning for over two years, with news coming in February 2018 that the city of Xenia and ODOT were planning the new intersection with an estimated $1.1 million budget.
