Xenia Twp. offers spring cleaning help to keep local roadways clean

Residents in Xenia Twp. have a few more days to get rid of yard debris, old furniture and other waste in large trash containers placed at various locations around the township.

It’s part of a plan to help keep litter from local roadways.

The containers are being provided by the township as part of Community Clean-Up Days, and they will be in place until Monday.

Xenia Twp. Administrator Alan Stock said providing dumpsters, which includes emptying them on a regular basis, costs the township a little more than $4,000.

“The trustees provide these as a service to their residents to help them reduce the cost of clearing the clutter from around their homes as well as helping to reduce the costs of removing trash from township roadways,” Stock said. “There has been a significant reduction in major debris along the roadways in the past two years.”

The four large trash containers are located along the roadways or in parking lots at the Wilberforce Community Center, 1208 Wilberforce-Clifton Road; Old Hook Road; 125 Fairground Road; and 8 Brush Row Road.

The trash containers have been in place since clean-up days started March 18.

Leory Little lives near where a dumpster is located on Hook Road. From his porch, Little said he sees people littering, tossing out fast-food restaurant bags and beer bottles from their vehicles.

Little said the dumpsters are a convenience that he plans to use this year.

“Good thing to take advantage of, instead of stuff laying around you want to get rid of,” he said.

Items that can be tossed into the containers include tree branches up to 6 feet long, cans, fabric, furniture, glass, household items, lawn clippings, paper, plastic and wood.

Items that should not be thrown in the large containers include batteries; computers and monitors; fluorescent bulbs, anything with Freon unless tagged as being removed; liquids; motor oil; televisions; tires; and wet paint.

Other items — including metal appliances, electronics and household hazardous materials — can be disposed of on certain days at the Greene County Environmental Services, 2145 Greene Way Blvd., Xenia. Upcoming drop-off days are April 13, April 23, May 11 and May 21.
