Amazing LEGO creations to be on display downtown this weekend

First Dayton BrickUniverse LEGO Fan Convention will be downtown this weekend

This weekend, the Chicago skyline, New Orleans’ Mardi Gras and the Eiffel Tower will fill the Dayton Convention Center.

The BrickUniverse LEGO Fan Convention will be held for the first time in Dayton Aug. 18 and 19.

Professional LEGO artists Jonathan Lopes of San Diego, California, Rocco Buttliere of Chicago and Paul Hetherington of Canada will be at the convention with dozens of their creations made from the interlocking plastic bricks.

“The LEGO artists are like rock stars,” Greyson Beights, who started BrickUniverse when he was 14 years old, said in a press release.

“When you walk into the event, one of the first things you see are the artist galleries filled with massive LEGO displays. The LEGO artists built everything with thousands of LEGO bricks. They are at BrickUniverse all weekend to answer questions about their work and talk to and teach attendees how they, too, can become master builders. The kids love it.”

Among the amazing creations that will be on view at the convention will be a replica of New York City’s Woolworth Building created with 120,000 bricks, a scene from London that includes the sprawling Houses of Parliament using 50,000 bricks, and a detailed view of a Lady Gaga concert that took 20,000 bricks to build.

The event will include a Building Zone where attendees can build their own creations, a Big Brick Building with larger Duplo bricks so that younger kids can get in on the building fun and a Star Wars Zone with LEGO Star Wars-themed bricks.
