Memorial Day sales: what to buy and avoid

Some of the best deals and sales of the year are here— or will start very soon— on everything from clothing to mattresses.

"Memorial Day is a big weekend for apparel, that's probably the number one category," said Benjamin Glaser with the comparison shopping website DealNews.com.

Shoppers can expect 30 percent off on spring clothes at stores like Macy’s and the Gap, plus with a coupon you could get an additional 40 percent off, according to DealNews.

Kitchen appliances are expected to be 70 percent off at many retailers.

Furniture City in Riverside is gearing up for their annual Memorial Day sale which starts tomorrow.

“We are taking up to 30 percent off throughout the store, some really good bargains,” general manager Sam Hamdan said, adding he expects shoppers will be looking for beds, sofas, and dinettes.

Now is the time to buy a mattress, according to Glaser, “you can look for at least 50 percent off.”

Also, home improvement items will also be steals.

Lowe’s is expected to offer 50 percent off, and Home Depot will have 34 percent off sales on many items, according to DealNews.

To get the best price, Glaser recommends doing an online shopping comparison before going to the store, and making a list to avoid impulse buys.

Items to avoid buying this Memorial Day shopping season—patio furniture, laptops, and other electronics.
