Spending is nearly doubling this year on Miamisburg’s sidewalk, curbs and gutters program, which involves some of the city’s busiest roads and includes a schedule pushing into 2015.

Nearly $450,000 will be spent to upgrade infrastructure on more than 180 properties on 12 streets, said City Engineer Bob Stanley. Miamisburg typically spends about $250,000 on the program, addressing about eight streets and nearly 100 properties, he said.

The cost of the improvements will be assessed to the property owners, city officials said. The number of land owners opting to have the city contract the work is a key reason for the increased spending, said Miamisburg Mayor Dick Church Jr.

“In the past, we’ve just had a lot of people do it on their own,” he said. “So when this happens we have to budget more because we have to pay it up front and (the property owners) can pay it back over 10 years.”

The work includes upgrades for property along Belvo Road, King Richard Parkway, Linden Avenue and the McGuire plat, some of the cities “busiest and biggest” streets, Stanley said

Because of the scope of the 2014 program, it is not scheduled to be completed until next spring, he said.

“Typically we try to get the program done by the end of the year,” Stanley said. “But because of the size of the program we decided to let it go into next year. And we got good, competitive bids this year.”

R.A. Miller Construction Co. Inc., of Hamilton submitted the lowest of three bids, according to city records. Its submission of $442,777, expected to accepted by Miamisburg City Council on Tuesday, July 15, is nearly $70,000 below the $509,000 the city budgeted.

The work on Linden Avenue will go only from First to Seventh streets. Improvements on Linden, Old Main Street and the McGuire plat area are expected to be completed by Nov. 1, according to records. The remainder of the project is set to be done by May 2015.
