Middletown woman identified as pedestrian killed while crossing

A Middletown woman has been identified as the pedestrian killed Wednesday night after being struck by a pickup truck while crossing North University Boulevard.

Yvonne McKnight, 56, was crossing North University Boulevard at Woodlawn Avenue at about 6:30 p.m. when the truck, headed south, hit her, according to the Hamilton Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol.

“All indications are that the pedestrian failed to yield right of way,” said Lt. Clint Arnold of the Ohio Highway Patrol.

McKnight was wearing dark clothing and was not crossing in a crosswalk, he said.

The investigation is continuing, but charges are not expected to be filed against the driver, according to Arnold.

“We are urging pedestrians to protect themselves. Be aware of how quickly it gets dark at night. Always try to cross at a crosswalk or by a street light,” he said.

He added, “never try to estimate the speed of cars and keep in mind there has been a huge increase in distracted drivers. The driver just may not see you.”

There is no indication the driver in Wednesday night’s incident was distracted by anything like a cell phone, Arnold said.

From January 2012 to Wednesday there have been 19 fatal pedestrian crashes in Butler County, he said.
