Mom Burned 4-Year-Old With Hot Spoon

A Dayton mother said she was trying to cure her daughter of ringworm by using a hot metal spoon.

On Monday, Kristal Hill was sentenced for giving her daughter second-degree burns last March.

After a mistrial earlier this year, a second jury found Hill guilty on two charges of child endangering in November.

Hill admitted that she used a heated spoon on her 4-year-old daughter, but she said she never meant to hurt her.

Hill, a mother of five children said, "I was actually just trying to help my child." She said her daughter had ringworm on her shoulder and she was trying to cure it with her own remedy.

"I tried to use bleach to dry it out. I used cortisone, which I later found out was the worst thing to use on ringworm," Hill said.

Authorities said the hot spoon gave the child burns that led to Hill being arrested on child endangering charges.

"I feel like other mothers should know that you can't use those remedies on your children. You can't do it, it's unacceptable," Hill said.

Hill could have gone to prison for 11 years. However, Judge Timothy O'Connell sentenced her to five years of community control.

The child's father hoped Hill would serve some jail time.

"I just want the courts to recognize Kristal for the monster she is," Vernon Thomas said.

O'Connell said he believed that Hill was sorry and would never do anything like that again.

"Ms. Hill has shown general remorse and has expressed considerable remorse for the offense," O'Connell said.

Hill must follow a reunification plan in order to see her children. Her mother has temporary custody of the now 5-year-old.

Hill was a bus driver with Dayton Public Schools at the time. However, she is no longer employed with the school district.
