12 movies that came to Butler County for filming

There have been a dozen movies filmed in Butler County since Ohio implemented its movie tax credit program in 2009.

The tax credit program is now up to $40 million and there’s legislation being considered to increase to that amount to $100 million.

Most of the movies that recorded scenes in Butler County were in Hamilton. Here are the movies that filmed most or part of their scenes in the county:

“Ides of March”

Stars: Ryan Gosling, Paul Giamatti, George Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman,

"Ides of March" is the story of how a staffer for a presidential candidate receives a crash course on dirty politics during his stint on the campaign trail.

The movie features the campus of Miami University in Oxford. It was filmed in March 2011 and the movie was released in October 2011. The movie was nominated for a number of awards, including Best Adapted Screenplay at the 84th Academy Awards.

“Carol”

Stars: Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara

"Carol" is about an aspiring photographer develops an intimate relationship with an older woman in 1950s New York. The Academy Award-nominated movie released in 2015 featured the downtown Hamilton mainstay, Kostas. Filming took place in 2014, and also featured locations in Lebanon in Warren County.

The movie received six academy Award nominations, including for Best Actress in a Lead Role (Cate Blanchett and Mara Rooney), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, and Best Costume Design.

“The Long Home” and “Goat”

“The Long Home” stars: James Franco, Analeigh Tipton, Ashton Kutcher, Josh Hutcherson

“Goat” stars: Ben Schnetzer, Nick Jonas

“The Long Home” is about a young contractor is hired to build a honky-tonk in Tennessee by the man who killed his father. It was filmed in 2015 in Butler County, and filmed simultaneously as Franco’s other film, “Goat,” which he produced.

“Goat” was released in 2016 and “The Long Home” is listed to be in post-production and released this year.

“Tiger”

Stars: Mickey Rourke, Prem Singh, Janel Parrish, Marshall Manesh

"Tiger" is a boxing movie starring Oscar nominee Mickey Rourke that was filmed in November 2015. It was also the fourth movie filmed in Hamilton and features locations around parts of Butler and Hamilton counties. Filmmakers spent six weeks on location in Hamilton.

According to IMDB, the film is completed and expected to be released this year.

“Gotti”

Stars: John Travolta, Spencer Rocco Lofranco, Kelly Preston

"Gotti" is the story of crime boss John Gotti and his son. Travolta filmed scenes for the movie in the Butler County Jail.

“Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile”

Stars: Kaya Scodelario, Zac Efron, Haley Joel Osment

Zac Efron’s movie about serial killer Ted Bundy titled “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile,” created a lot of buzz locally, and even managed to land Sheriff Richard K. Jones to appear in the film. The movie filmed in Hamilton and the Greater Cincinnati region this year.

The movie is listed in post-production with no anticipated release date, according to IMDB.

“Surviving Compton: Dre, Suge & Michel’le”

Stars: Rhyon Nicole Brown, Curtis Hamilton, Kedrick Brown

The streets of Middletown, and Cincinnati's Hyde Park, were transformed into scenes from California for "Surviving Compton: Dre, Suge & Michel'le," which follows hip-hop recording artist Michel'le's in her early life in Compton and her tumultuous relationship in the early 1990s with N.W.A member and Death Row Records founder Dr. Dre.

The movie, originally titled “Girl from Compton,” aired in 2016 on Lifetime Movies. The movie was made because producers said Michel’le’s story wasn’t a part of 2015’s blockbuster “Straight Outta Compton.”

“My Days of Mercy”

Stars: Kate Mara, Ellen Page, Amy Seimetz, Brian Geraghty, Elias Koteas

"Days of Mercy" is a story about Lucy, the daughter of a man who is on death row, falls in love with Mercy, a woman on the opposing side of her family's political cause. As a result, Lucy's value for truth is tested as her world begins to unravel.

Just one scene was filmed in Hamilton near Combs Park with the city’s power plant in the background. The scene was a protest outside the fictional prison depicted in the movie. The scene was filmed in the summer of 2016 and took just a couple days.

The movie was released in September 2017.

“Blood Heist” and “Blood Ride”

“Blood Heist” stars: James Franco, Shakira Barrera, Edy Ganem

“Blood Ride” stars: Bobbi Hornsby, Serinda Swan, Pollyanna McIntosh

“Blood Heist” is about an event where something goes terribly wrong when a band of Latin sisters and their brother attempt a violent robbery in order to make their first indie film.

“Blood Ride” is about the story where a woman becomes a strong and ruthless member of the all-female Dark Moon gang. The all-female motorcycle gang looks after each other as they patrol the streets in a small town.

“Old Man and the Gun”

Stars: Robert Redford, Casey Affleck

“Old Man and the Gun” is the story of an elderly bank robber now living in a retirement community and wanted to one more heist. It movie is listed as “completed” and slated to be released this year, according to IMDB.
