A golden retriever was found alone at Newport Beach, California, after his owner appeared to have abandoned him.

The dog wandered around the beach with a 46-pound tumor on his side.

KTLA reported that the dog, Henry, was found May 12.

"We got a call that there was a dog that was dumped on the beach. So when we went, we got him, and we we went, 'oh my gosh,'" Valerie Schomburg, a Newport Beach Animal Control supervisor, told KTLA Wednesday.

The tumor was so big that it hindered Henry's ability to lift his leg to relieve himself.

Investigators think Henry was someone's pet at one point, but are still following leads to determine if this is a case of neglect or animal cruelty.

KTLA reported that vets decided to take a chance and perform surgery to remove the tumor upon finding out Henry, who they think is about 8 years old, was strong enough for an operation.

"Most vets that we've asked, and have been involved in his story, have never seen it that big," Schomburg said.

Six days after his June 2 surgery, Henry seems to be doing well. If that continues, he should be up for adoption soon.

"You can't keep him down," Schomburg said.
