"Albert Finney, aged 82, passed away peacefully after a short illness with those closest to him by his side," a family spokesman said in a statement to The Telegraph. "The family requests privacy at this sad time."
In 2011, Finney's agent confirmed the actor had been treated for kidney cancer, according to The Guardian.
Finney shot to international fame in 1963 with his starring role in “Tom Jones.” The film gained him the first of five Oscar nominations. Others followed for "Murder on the Orient Express," ''The Dresser," ''Under the Volcano" and "Erin Brockovich."
Although he never won an Oscar -- and declined a knighthood in 2000, according to The Guardian -- Finney earned several other awards over the course of his career, including a Golden Globe for his performance in "Tom Jones" and a BAFTA and an Emmy award for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in 2002's television film "The Gathering Storm."

Finney appeared in dozens of films over the course of his career, most recently lending his authority to action movies, including the James Bond thriller "Skyfall" and two of the Bourne films.
He is survived by his wife, Pene Delmage, and his son, Simon, The Guardian reported.
