Alabama couple escapes fire after dog wakes them up

An Alabama couple are safe Monday morning thanks to their pet dog, whose barking alerted them as fire engulfed their home.

The dog's barking woke up the couple in Madison County just after 2 a.m., WHNT reported.

Moores Mill Volunteer Fire Rescue crews responded to the scene, the television station reported.

Firefighters said the house was ablaze, but the couple was able to escape with their dog and one of their two cats. The second cat died in the fire, WHNT reported.

The pets that survived were taken to an emergency animal hospital, the television station reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation, authorities said.
