Although some on social media said the name Ugly was likely referencing the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, “The Ugly Duckling,” others said it was racist to give the name to the darkest-colored duck.
“We are very sorry for any upset caused by the name of this product, it was absolutely not our intention to cause any offence,” the company said in a statement Tuesday. “We removed the product from sale several weeks ago while we changed the labeling and our ducklings are now back on sale.”
The new labeling no longer includes names for the ducklings, according to Sky News.
Aliberti thanked the company for making the changes in an April 9 tweet.
