Cattle call: Heifers escape from St. Louis slaughterhouse

Half a dozen cattle hoofed it out of a St. Louis slaughterhouse Thursday afternoon, spawning an hours-long police chase, The Associated Press reported. It also sparked an online fundraising drive to spare them from death.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported the six heifers escaped from the Star Packing Co. on Thursday afternoon and took to north St. Louis streets, trotting through neighborhoods and interrupting traffic. Police eventually rounded them up, the Post-Dispatch reported.

A vegetarian from suburban St. Louis started a GoFundMe page to buy the animals' freedom, setting a goal of $20,000. As of Saturday morning, more than $15,300 has been raised.
