The Tribune said Peterson was not seriously injured.
Federal and state officials were initially silent about the reason for Peterson’s transfer, but the Tribune obtained documents through an open records request that indicated a murder-for-hire scheme the former police sergeant was convicted of last summer meant he posed an ongoing threat.
Peterson was serving a 38-year sentence in Kathleen Savio's death in February 2015 when he was charged with solicitation of murder for a plot -- from prison -- to have Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow killed, the Tribune reported. Glasgow was the prosecutor who convicted Peterson of murder in 2012.
He was sentenced to another 40 years in prison for his effort to have the prosecutor killed, the newspaper reported.
Savio, Peterson's third wife, was found dead in her bathtub in March 2004. Her death, initially classified as an accidental drowning, took place a month before she and Peterson were set to resolve outstanding financial issues from their divorce, according to Biography.com.
Savio’s death got a fresh look from authorities after the 2007 disappearance of Peterson’s fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, made national headlines. Investigators, who exhumed Savio’s body for a new examination, reclassified her death as a homicide.
Drew Peterson has maintained his innocence in Savio's death, as well as in the disappearance of Stacy Peterson, who has never been found. Drew Peterson's 37-year-old son, Stephen Peterson, is raising the couple's two children, who are now in middle school, the Tribune reported.
Stephen Peterson told the newspaper earlier this year that he's spent nearly a decade cleaning up his father's "mess," and that he believes his father "probably" killed both Savio and Stacy Peterson.
“I don't want to come out and say he did it ... but, I'm sure he did it,” Stephen Peterson said.
