DJ Khaled has joined the list of celebrities who are helping to provide much-needed protective gear to medical workers and supplies to communities during the coronavirus pandemic.

In a Monday news release, the We the Best Foundation, a nonprofit formed by Khaled and his wife, Nicole Tuck, announced it is working with humanitarian aid organization Direct Relief and retailer Simplehuman to donate items that will help in the fight against COVID-19.

According to the Miami Herald, the famous couple got their inspiration from Miami handbag designer Gelareh Mizrahi, who began a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for N95 masks, gloves, goggles and face shields for hospitals. Khaled and Tuck then "joined in on her efforts," the foundation's news release said of Mizrahi, whose brother works at a hospital in New York. They then partnered with Direct Relief "to give the most vulnerable the equipment they need," the release said.

So far, their efforts have provided more than 10,000 "masks, gloves and dozens of PPE (personal protective equipment) kits for health care workers" at hospitals in New York and Miami, according to the release.

"This support translates into immediate, practical help, and is such a wonderful example of everyone pulling together and doing whatever we can to protect those who are most vulnerable," Direct Relief President and CEO Thomas Tighe said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Khaled’s foundation also has been working with California-based Simplehuman to provide touch-free soap pumps to communities across the country, beginning with Los Angeles.
