Derek Jeter, now a part owner of the Miami Marlins, said he would forgo his $5 million salary so employees could get paid through May 31.

Miami Marlins chief executive officer Derek Jeter told employees Monday he will stop drawing a paycheck from the team indefinitely because of the coronavirus pandemic.

According to ESPN, Jeter made the announcement during a conference call and said his $5 million annual salary will be used to pay baseball operations personnel through at least May 31.

Neither Jeter nor the Marlins have commented publicly about forgoing salaries, The Associated Press reported.

According to Forbes, Jeter receives a $5 million base salary, a $4 million management fee and a $1 million travel budget. NJ.com reported.

Jeter, who was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in January, made more than $265 million during his playing career with the Yankees, according to Baseball-Reference.

“This is unprecedented times,” Jeter told the Marlins’ “Beyond the Bases” podcast on April 8. “It’s better to overcommunicate.”

Spring training for major league baseball teams was suspended March 12 because of COVID-19. The beginning of the regular season, which had been scheduled for March 26, has been suspended indefinitely.
