The inmate was pronounced dead by the doctor on duty just after 1 p.m.
The offender was in the inpatient department and had been receiving treatment for a terminal illness, according to a release.
Burton does not suspect foul play.
With every in-custody death, the offender will be transferred to the Mississippi state medical examiner for autopsy in accordance with state law, the release said.
The official cause and manner of death are pending autopsy results.
The inmate’s identity has not been released due to the family not having been notified at this time.
