According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the calf weighed 1,000 to 2,000 pounds. The animal was likely separated from its mother and swam to shore because it was unable to eat on its own, WPTV reported.
The FWC said sperm whales are a federally endangered species, in Florida.
Officials from the FWC were at the scene, taking photos and investigating the mammal’s death. Officials said crews will move the sperm whale and perform a necropsy to determine its cause of death.
