Runners were handed water in pouches called Ooho!, environmentally friendly pods made from seaweed extracts, in an effort to reduce single-use plastic waste, The Independent reported.

Runners could either eat or discard the casings, which are designed to biodegrade within 45 days. They were invented by London startup Skipping Rocks Lab.

"The marathon is a milestone," Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez, one of the company's founders told CNN. "We are hoping we will demonstrate that it can be used at scale in the future."
