Florida police officer shoots himself while trying to shoot at charging dog

A Florida police officer shot himself in the hand after firing his service weapon because a dog was charging toward him, officials said.

The officer went to the front door and the family's female boxer, Bella, started running toward him, WPLG reported.

The officer fired one shot and it hit his own hand, Davie police said.

The officer is expected to recover. The dog was grazed by the bullet.

"Right now I'm being told that the dog is still at home with the family," officials told WPLG.
