He grabbed Stinson, 74, and tried to steal the money she kept in a brown bag in her pocket, she told The Birmingham News.

"I just thought I wasn't going to be here no more," Stinson told the Birmingham News. "I grabbed him good between his legs. That's always been my plan because that's a man's weak spot, but I didn't know it was going to come true. I know he's going to be sore."

Stinson fended off the attacker for almost five minutes before people took notice and a good Samaritan came to her aid.

"He was a godsend. We don't know what he would have done had they not been there,'' Sgt. Jesse Bell told the Birmingham News. "We're thankful he was there to stop it. We need more community involvement like this."

Stinson was cleared by medics at the scene. She did not get to meet the man who intervened but appreciates that he did.

"I was scared because I thought that was the end of my life,'' Stinson told the Birmingham News. "I tell you what, the Lord gave me strength this morning."
