"This is the first time I have ever come across a dog in a storage unit," Animal Control officer Mike Ehart told the Enquirer. "The contract tells them they can't keep animals in the units."
Ehart did not believe the dog was in distress and left a note for the owner that they were in violation of a city ordinance. The next day, Ehart returned to find the dog was still locked inside.
Ehart got a search warrant and removed the lock from the unit.
Inside, there was furniture but no food or water. The Great Dane was taken to an animal shelter. The dog was determined to be about 20 pounds underweight but overall is healthy.
The dog's owner is believed to have been evicted and could not be found as of Thursday afternoon, the Enquirer reported.
