An animal rescue team along with fire department crew and police officers helped get the horse, a 24-year-old mare named Mercy, out of the septic tank in Bunnell. The rescue operation took nearly four hours and was complicated by rainy conditions, according to the report on the Flagler County Sheriff's Office Facebook page.
A pulley system was devised using a harness and a rope wrapped around Mercy's middle, with a large, flat surface called a sked for leverage. To keep her calm, Mercy was given a tranquilizer and a mask was placed over her eyes as she lay in the tank waiting to be rescued. Once removed from the tank, she was hosed down with antiseptic materials and will be given antibiotics.
