Hundreds show up to join owner on dog's last beach walk

Mark Woods has three other dogs, but there was something special about Walnut.

Woods got the 18-year-old greyhound when he was just a pup. The dog was his best friend through two marriages and three engagements.

"I have struggled with illness and had some bad times in my life and he has helped me through some desperate situations and I owe it to him to give him this back," Woods told The Sun.

Over time Walnut's health deteriorated. Before having Walnut euthanized, Woods invited people to join the two Saturday for their final walk along Porth Beach. More than 200 people, and more than as many dogs, joined them.

"Thank you to the hundreds of people that attended the walk this morning and to all those that had their own walks with their beloved pets at 9.30am all around the world," Woods posted on Facebook.

Walnut enjoyed burgers and custard cremes, his favorite treats. Woods carried Walnut in a blanket as the dog was too weak to walk across the sand.

Strangers came over to offer Woods comfort. Children petted Walnut.

"He's been with me through some very difficult times in my life and he's just got me through them, both physically and mentally," Woods told the Sun. "We've shared a lot of dramas, a lot of fun and a lot of shenanigans and he's exceptionally special. Eighteen years is a long time to build up a bond of friendship."
