"These tunnels are about a half-mile long and the pictures simply don't tell the whole story. It is a major health and safety issue that has been left unnoticed until today," Chief Shad Prichard said in the social media post.
The tunnel was discovered when an officer saw a person crawl into a drainage area, KSAT reported. Authorities found a series of tunnels that led to a major tunnel, which was 10 feet tall and 10 feet wide, the television station reported.
"I've seen quite a bit in my career. But this thing is different," Prichard told KSAT. "Because of the amount of materials and decomposing food and feces and all that. It creates an environment and a smell like you've never seen or heard of. It's unbelievable."
One side of the tunnel is under the jurisdiction of the Hollywood Park Police Department, but the other side is part of San Antonio, according to the Facebook post.
“The amount of trash and material collected on the San Antonio side is far more than our agency can handle,” police said.
"When you first walk into these tunnels, it just seems like it goes on forever and then it just opens up into a room and then more tunnels and more rooms," Prichard told KSAT. "And it really is like a small little town down there."
