A New Jersey mother claims her eight-year-old daughter received a one-day suspension from school this week for wearing the wrong shade of green. Crystal, the mother of twins, said she received a phone call from the principal stating the Kylie's shirt violated school dress code. The colors of shirts and blouses allowed at the school are dark green, navy blue and white as stated in the school's official dress code. Kylie's shirt was a Kelly green.
"He wanted me to know that she can't wear that shirt and if she does wear that shirt again, she would be suspended," she told FOX 29. She also admitted that the conversation with school officials got heated.
When her daughters missed the bus, Crystal tried to drop them off at school but the principal would not allow her to sign Kylie in to class. “I got suspended for wearing the different color they wanted me to wear,” said Kylie. “The principal told me that I don’t have to stay here and I could leave.” Crystal took both of the girls home that day.
Crystal isn’t the only parent whose child is facing suspension for dress code violation. A grandmother in the community says her grandson was suspended from school for wearing the wrong shade of blue.
One mother in the community stands with the school board. She believes the policies were thoroughly explained prior to the first day of school. “I mean, if you start letting certain things slide, then you have to let a lot of things slide, and then everyone is pretty much wearing what they want to wear,” she said.
A school spokesperson told FOX 29 that the allegations that Kylie was suspended for the color for her shirt are incorrect and they did not comment further.
