Parents in one Wisconsin town will soon find themselves in trouble if their children bully other kids.
The Plover Village Board adopted an anti-bullying ordinance that will now hold parents responsible for the actions of their children, The Stevens Point Journal reported.
Parents will get police notification if their child is caught bullying others. If it happens again within a 90-day period, the parents could be fined $124, Police Chief Dan Ault told the Point Journal.
Ault proposed and wrote the ordinance.
He thinks the law will not only hold parents accountable, but it could motivate parents to confront their children's behavior.
A similar ordinance was passed in another Wisconsin city in 2013. Since it was adopted, police have not issued tickets, but have given three warnings.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that at least 20 percent of high schoolers are bullied at school and 15 percent are bullied online, according to the latest report, published in 2013.
