Pink full moon rising this week, but why new moon isn’t really pink

The first full moon of spring in April is called the pink full moon and it’s rising Friday.

But don't expect to see an actual pink moon. It's called a pink moon because it coincides with the blossoming of the pink wildflower known as ground phlox, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac.

The April full moon is also known as the egg moon, sprouting grass moon, Easter moon and fish moon, names Native Americans once used to describe the lunar cycle and keep track of time and the seasons.

The pink full moon will rise around 8 p.m. Friday night and set around 7 a.m. Saturday.
