Police officer fired for 'vile and disgusting act' involving homeless man, chief says

Many people would want to help a homeless man, but one San Antonio police officer is accused of doing the exact opposite.

In May, Officer Matthew Luckhurst allegedly put a sandwich with feces in a Styrofoam container next to a sleeping homeless man while on bike patrol one evening, the Washington Post reported.

However, that wasn’t the last of it. Luckhurst then reportedly bragged about what he did to a fellow officer.

According to the Post, officers reported Luckhurst for what he did two months later, which sparked an “unsuccessful search for the homeless man as well as an internal investigation.”

"This was a vile and disgusting act that violates our guiding principles of 'treating all with integrity, compassion, fairness and respect,'" Police Chief William McManus said in a statement to WCHS. "The fact that his fellow officers were so disgusted with his actions that they reported him to Internal Affairs demonstrates that this type of behavior will never be tolerated."

Luckhurst was fired last week.

San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor also released a statement about Luckhurst, telling the station, "Firing this officer was the right thing to do."

Taylor added, “His actions were a betrayal of every value we have in our community, and he is not representative of our great police force."
