Rare colored deer spotted in Cleveland park

A deer with a rare, recessive trait which causes a unique coloration was spotted in Cleveland Metroparks recently.

The park shared the image of the piebald deer on its Facebook page Thursday, asking:

“Have you ever seen a piebald deer?”

The genetic variation is apparent in less than 1 percent of the white-tailed deer population.

The piebald has brown eyes, a dark nose and hoofs. It otherwise lacks pigmentation, which varies by each deer.

Piebalds also typically suffer more birth defects including scoliosis, short legs and internal organ deformities, according to the parks group.
