GM recalls nearly 700,000 trucks for steering defect

A glitch in the power steering of certain GM vehicles could cause drivers to lose control of the steering wheel, increasing the risk of crashing.

GM is recalling almost 700,000 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks that might have a temporary loss of electric power steering assist, especially making turns at low speeds, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

GM will notify vehicle owners. Dealerships will update the vehicle's computer software to fix the defect for free. GM has not yet provided a notification schedule.

Chevrolet owners can call 1-800-222-1020. GMC customer service is 1-800-432-8782. The GM number for this recall is 17276.
