Mike Pence's press secretary denounced a profile The Atlantic magazine posted Tuesday that said the vice president told GOP officials he would step up to replace then-candidate Donald Trump after the "Access Hollywood" tape became public weeks before the 2016 election.

Alyssa Farah, Pence’s press secretary, tweeted Tuesday, “Regarding The Atlantic’s tired, false claim about the VP during the campaign — we denied this in the article and deny it again today. Didn’t happen.”

According to the piece, Pence contacted then-Republican Committee Chairman Reince Priebus and offered to be the party's nominee if Trump were to somehow be removed by the RNC. According to the story, the RNC was considering buying Trump off or finding other ways to dump him from the party’s presidential ticket.

The story claims that some in the GOP suggested that Pence be the party’s presidential nominee with former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in the vice presidential slot.

The story also said that Pence’s wife, Karen, was “disgusted” by the “Access Hollywood” video that captured Trump saying he could assault women because he was famous.

"She (Karen Pence) finds him reprehensible — just totally vile," The Atlantic quoted an unnamed former campaign aide as saying.
