According to a Supreme Court news release, Ginsburg, 87, "underwent nonsurgical treatment for acute cholecystitis, a benign gallbladder condition," at Johns Hopkins Hospital on Tuesday afternoon.
The treatment came one day after outpatient tests at a Washington, D.C., hospital determined that Ginsburg had suffered “from a gallstone that had migrated to her cystic duct, blocking it and causing an infection,” the court said.
Ginsburg is now "resting comfortably" and likely will remain hospitalized "for a day or two," the release said, adding that the justice plans to participate in the court's oral arguments via teleconference Wednesday.
This is not the first health scare for the justice, who was appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1993. According to The Associated Press, Ginsburg was hospitalized with "chills and fever" in November 2019, three months after she was treated for pancreatic cancer. In 2018, she also underwent treatment to have cancerous nodules removed and fractured three ribs after falling in her office.
