Therapy dogs on duty in D.C. after long-fought election season

The long election season is finally over, and some four footed friends are trying to ease the mental anguish many are feeling on the morning after the 2016 presidential election.

A handful of groups offered therapy dogs for workers on Capitol Hill, WJLA reported.

The groups said they were helping people deal with the stress of Election Day with "the help of a non-judgemental, furry, four-legged best friend that enjoys bipartisan support."

The dogs are certified therapy animals.

Experts said that connecting with pets helps combat cardiovascular disease, stress and blood pressure. It also helps people sleep.

The dogs were in the Cannon House Office Building at the U.S. Capitol from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

The Capitol wasn't the only location in the country where working dogs were helping heal the wounds of the election.

At the University of Massachusetts Boston, therapy dogs were there to help people de-stress.
