Trader Joe's has removed all the recalled products from store shelves and destroyed them.
"If you purchased any of the Mediterranean Hummus or White Bean & Basil Hummus with the specified plant identification and date codes, please do not eat it," the company said in a recall notice. "We urge you to discard the product or return it to any Trader Joe's for a full refund. … We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience."
Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in the young, frail or elderly and among those with weakened immune systems. Healthy people who are infected by the organism might suffer short-term symptoms, including a high fever, severe headaches and nausea.
The bacteria can cause pregnant women to suffer miscarriages or stillbirths.
