Patrol officials say the trooper at the scene overheard the woman talking to her husband about how they would no longer be able to afford a birthday present for their 9-year-old -- because of the ticket and repair costs.

The officer cleared the scene and then went out to retrieve a "Frozen" doll and coloring books for the child’s birthday.

The trooper then delivered it to their home.

Tina Provoncha, the wife of the trooper involved, Larry Provoncha, reached out to KIRO 7 over Facebook.

“My husband,” Tina Provoncha wrote. “He never ceases to amaze me with his kindness. When he told me what he was about to do…I cried. He actually won best police officer last night, at our Best of Whidbey awards. Well deserved.”
